When is airline's responsability
Mainly the flight issues are related to the airlines. They are responsibles of the issues with the tickets and with the plane, for example: overbooked flight, a delay caused by plane maintenance or cancelled flights because of airline’s worker’s strike. Sometimes the mistakes in flight planning as well. These are some of the main reasons when the responsible is the airline.
When this happens, firts off all the airline has to make everthing which is possible to make you arrive on your destination. Buy a new flight, pay for your meals, hotels and transportation, and ofcourse pay for everything that you have paid and couldn’t cancel. If all of theses is not neccesary because you just don’t want to travel anymore you can ask for a refund of your ticket and cover the expenses.
Secondly here is the compensation that you deserve thanks to the European Regulation 261: Up to 600€ per passengers on long distance flights, 400€ on medium, and 250€ on shorts.
When is airport's responsability
Sometimes airport’s workers start an strike or maybe the aren’t enought or there is a computer failure, electrical problems or anything realted to the airport and not to the airline. Also the weather problems like hurricanes, floods or earthquakes are treated the same way.
When anything of this causes a delay, or cancelled flight you’ll be able to ask a refund, but not a compensation. Also the airline will have to find any way to make you get to your destination. But there is a tricky part here! Sometimes the airlines try to take advantage of a rain as an excuse for a delay or cancelled flight.
