Compensation for extra expenses due to a delay

But this is not the only thing you can request to your airline. You can also ask for a compensation for the next expenses:

  • If you had to buy a new ticket due to the problem with a flight, you can also ask for the money of the new ticket to your original airline.
  • If you cancelled your trip because the new date makes no sense, the airline must give you back the money for the ticket and all generated expenses in destinations (hotels, tours, …)
  • The airline has to pay for all expenses generated while you wait for a new flight too (food, hotel in the airport, taxis, …)
For example, let’s say you fly with a friend from Barcelona to Istanbul and our flight gets delayed more than 5 hours. In addition, the airline does not pay for any of your meals. Moreover, you miss in Istanbul a rental car you have rented in advance with a cost of 200 €, and consequently, you arrived very late at your destination.

In this case, the compensation for the delayed flight should be: 400 € per passenger + € 30 + € 200, which totals 1,030 €.

Special case: If you want to claim a delay between 3 and 4 hours after they changed your airplane

If you had a flight over 3500 km which was cancelled, but the airline relocated you in another flight which arrived between 3 and 4 hours later then the original planned flight, you will be able to claim €300. The compensation is given according to half the amount stipulated of €600 due to the fast reaction of the company.
